HMM will deploy two 4,600 teu ships, which, with three similar-sized vessels from APL and Evergreen, will transport goods between China and Australia.

A1X, which commences operations on 17 August, will call at Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Previously, HMM was active in this route by buying slots from Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Hamburg Süd, and Ocean Network Express.

Healthy demand convinced HMM to make a direct entry.

“The A1X service will help the company to offer competitive shipping services to customers in Australia. We have been serving customers by shipping cargo through other shipping firms and not our own ships,” HMM said.

HMM is now South Korea’s flagship container carrier after the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping in February 2017.

As of May, HMM operated 54 container ships and 35 bulk carriers.

It has been focusing on Asia-Europe and Asia-US west coast services, while collaborating with Sinokor Merchant Marine and Heung-A Shipping on intra-Asia services.

In April, HMM launched a truncated Asia-north Europe service that was well received, with shippers snapping up all slots on the 10 vessels deployed. Each had capacity of 4,600 teu.
